Born in 1929, Martin Luther King, Jr., was named Michael King, for his father. In 1934 the senior King, a pastor, went to Berlin for a meeting of the Baptist World Alliance. After he returned, he renamed himself and his son Martin Luther for the historic German Protestant reformer.
