On average, Mercury is the closest planet to Earth, as well as to every other planet in our solar system. Although Venus is closest to Earth while they are on the same side of the Sun, they are extremely far apart when on opposite sides. Mercury’s small solar orbit means that it is never as far from Earth as Venus.
