Orla Lehmann (born May 19, 1810, Copenhagen, Den.—died Sept. 13, 1870, Copenhagen) was a political reformer who successfully advocated parliamentary government in 19th-century Denmark. As a student leader in the 1830s, Lehmann was an outspoken critic of Denmark’s absolute monarchy. In the 1840s he was a leader of the National Liberal Party, which called for parliamentary government, a liberal economic system, and incorporation of the affiliated duchy of Schleswig into the Danish state. Lehmann was a leader of the nationalistic demonstrations of March 1848, which resulted in a liberal constitution, a popular ministry, and war against the separatists of Schleswig. ...(100 of 186 words)
