Alexei Ratmansky (born August 27, 1968, Leningrad, Russia, U.S.S.R. [now St. Petersburg, Russia]) is a Russian ballet dancer and choreographer known for his exceptional musicality, seemingly limitless energy, and stylistic versatility. As artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet (2004–08), he rescued the company from a financial and artistic quagmire, largely by diversifying its repertoire. Ratmansky grew up in an intellectual household in Kyiv, Ukraine, U.S.S.R.; his mother was a psychiatrist and his father an aeronautical engineer as well as a former champion gymnast.
